“My teacher asked if any of us had seen a turkey in real life. I said, ‘Yes – at my Uncle’s Farm!’”

That’s a direct quote from my 11-year-old niece, who I gather was rather impressed by our festive feathered friends. I can’t help but agree. With their sensational snoods, bronze plumage and curious eyes, it’s difficult not to be struck by the sight of a full-grown turkey. They were on display at our Winter Fair as ‘honorary greeters’, happily sharing their field with a few dozen parked cars and welcoming visitors with a signature ‘gobble-gobble!’

A cozy setup in the yard beckoned with all the familiar features. In amidst the fantastic stallholders and folky musicians were our resident therapy sheep – Foot and Frida – on their very best behaviour. Meanwhile, the smell of mulled applejuice, fresh cakes and hot coffee beckoned from the café. Raffle numbers were called, games played, prizes won and songs sung, and a great time was had by all.

A massive thank you goes to everyone who was involved with our Winter Fair. Looking around and seeing so many happy faces was a wonderful reminder that It’s a real privelege to be a part of the Wick community. Over the past 10 years, your continued support has helped Wick Care Farm grow into the therapeutic setting we are today. The money raised from the fair (a grand total of £1772!) will be put towards a new log burner for the main room, keeping everyone warm and toasty for many winters to come.

Just as it is a privelege to be a part of the Wick community, so to is it a privelege to be a part of the story of people’s lives – past and present. In 2022, I wrote that “Wick Care Farm is all about little moments. The feeling of bringing a plateful of freshly baked cookies to an eager table during morning break for all to share. The feeling of exertion and satisfaction in seeing a well-stacked wood store where an unceremonious pile once stood. The feeling of walking a haltered sheep for the very first time, in spite of your nerves.” In the two years since I originally wrote those words, I feel privileged to have witnessed, participated and shared in many more little moments at Wick Care Farm. Moments of laughter, courage, curiosity, openness and bravery. Moments of empathy, hilarity, perseverance and resilience. Moments of care, gratitude, presence and reflection.  I believed then just as I do now – at Wick Care Farm little moments are always waiting to be found.
